Stowe Vermont History
Stowe was first chartered as a town in 1763 by Benning Wentworth, the Governor of the Province of New Hampshire. It was one of several townships he chartered in that general region.
During the Revolutionary War, Stowe was a frontier town on the border between Vermont and New York. There were several raids by the British and their allies during the war, and Stowe was burned twice.
After the war, Stowe became a thriving agricultural community. dairy farming was an important industry in Stowe, and the town became known for its cheese. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,945.
