History
Portland was first settled in 1632 as a fishing village. It was incorporated as a city in 1786. Portland rapidly grew in the 19th century due to its shipbuilding and maritime trade. The city was also a popular destination for immigrants coming to the United States during this time. In the 20th century, Portland’s economy shifted from maritime to manufacturing and service industries. Portland is now known as a creative and vibrant city with a strong arts and food scene.
