About Deerfield, Massachusetts
History
The town of Deerfield was first settled in 1673 and officially incorporated in 1677. It was originally part of the town of Hadley but became its own municipality due to its distance from the other settlements in Hadley. The town was named for the large deer population that lived in the area.
Geography
Deerfield is located in Franklin County in the western part of Massachusetts. It is bordered by the towns of Conway and Shelburne to the north, Greenfield to the west, Montague to the south, and Hadley to the east. The town has a total area of 29 .9 square miles, of which 28.8 square miles is land and 1.1 square miles is water. The Deerfield River runs through the town and there are several ponds and brooks as well. Mount Sugarloaf, a popular hiking destination, is located in Deerfield.
