History

Bedford was first settled in 1729 by a group led by Major Samuel Blodget. The town was named after John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford, a member of the Cabinet of Great Britain during the American Revolution. Bedford was made a town in 1750 and became the county seat of Hillsborough County in 1771.

Bedford is in Hillsborough County, 50 miles north of Boston, adjacent to Manchester, NH with a population of 23,000 people. Bedford is considered an upscale residential town with zoning mostly residential. There are several major retail strip malls, and South River Road and Route 101 is popular to businesses, retail outlets, and restaurants.  Bedford real estate is very sought after with easy commuting access to Interstate 93, 293, and Route 3.
