All About Bennington, Vermont

History

Bennington, Vermont was first settled in 1761 by a group of families from Massachusetts. The town was named after Benning Wentworth, the Governor of New Hampshire at the time. The town grew quickly and soon became an important center for trade and manufacturing.

In the early 19th century, Bennington was known for its pottery and ironwork. The Bennington Battle Monument, the tallest structure in Vermont, was built to commemorate the Battle of Bennington, a key victory for the American forces during the Revolutionary War.

Today, Bennington is a small town with a population of just over 15,000. It is home to several historical sites and museums, as well as several small businesses and restaurants. The town is also a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and camping.

Geography

Bennington is located in southwestern Vermont, just north of the Massachusetts border and is located in Bennington County. The town is situated in a valley between the Green Mountains and the Taconic Range. The Batten Kill, a river that runs through Bennington, is popular for fishing and kayaking.

The Mile-Around Woods is a 1.3 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near North Bennington, Vermont that features beautiful wildflowers and is good for all skill levels.

Hiking: Bennington is home to several hiking trails, including the Long Trail, which runs the length of Vermont. Green Mountain Club of Bennington, hiking, walking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, trail maintenance, and other outdoor activities.
